At a height of 150 is has a spectacular view over the bay of Agios Georgios, mount Istoni , the Diapontian islands and the open sea as well as unprecedented sunsets .
From here, you will see the Diapontian islands and the desert island " Stone Ship ", which loks like a sailing boat which is on a never-ending journey and which was the cause for the creation of several myths and legends . According to Plinius , it is the stone ship of the Phaecians , while the locals here will tell you another story. They will talk to you about a queen Paphlagona, who asked Agios Nikolaos to punish her adulterer husband , who lost his mind for an Arab princess . Indeed, the Saint punished the adulterer , turning his ship into stone .
Archaeological findings prove that the village was first inhabited in the 6th century BC , but it was deserted to be inhabited again in the 6th century AD by Avars (a tribe of Mongolians or Huns).
A path will take you down to the historic double haven of " Porto Timone" . This port made Austrian archaeologists suspect that maybe Homer's Phaecia of Kind Alkinoos, was here. This same path will also take you to the uninhabited peninsula and the small church of Agios Stylianos, which has been created in a natural cave .
On your way there, you will be enchanted by the scents of heather, thyme and the sea, while you will go past relics of buildings of distant ages, fortifications and deserted port and military facilities from the ancient times until the difficult days of World War II.
At the restaurants and the coffee shops of the village you will enjoy new tastes with a wonderful panoramic view .
It is an experience not to be missed. |
