a.- Hesychius mentions that Othoni, which was uninhabited at the time, was the shelter of Elephenor, king of the Abantes of Euboea, after the end of the Trojan War, who seeked atonement, for having accidentally killed his grandfather. However, a dragon dismissed him from the island. â.- Various placenames on the island (cave of Calypso), traditions, as well as the fact that many locals have always had Homeric names, like Odysseus, Calypso, Telemachus etc. is evidence that Othoni is the Homeric island of Ogygia where Ulysses, after the end of the Trojan War, spent seven years ‘imprisoned by ’ Calypso in her cave.
Calypso was a nymph and a daughter of Atlas who lived in a cave. She welcomed Ulysses and gave him a great time with her.
The Cave of Calypso is in a place on the Western edge of the island, which cannot be reached from land, it is 100 m long. 10-15 m wide and 20 m high, and it has got two entrances.
