Mathraki is the southernmost and smallest island (3.1 sq. km) among the three isles in the North of Corfu. Home to approximately 100 residents, it is only 4 miles off Arillas cape. It is so rich in vegetation, that sometimes it is hard to discern the houses of its settlements though the green leaves.
Several wonderful old stone paths start from the main road and lead visitors to places with panoramic view. The cement-covered street starts from the port and goes to the golf 'Apidies', where we can still find the foundations of an old port, which has now been deserted and is used only as a harbor by fishermen. Towards the Southern coast (Kato Panta), the region Giorga has got many houses all over it, old and new ones, which lie under the shadow of huge olive trees. From the 'Chorio' settlement, you can go to the SE part of Mathraki, cape 'Arvanitico', through a dirt road, which leads to a calm gulf with fine sand. Absolute serenity, heavenly peace and a plain taverna just off the shore giving you the chance to take a pleasant break. At the Northeast, the immense beach of 'Portelo', with fine sand and crystal shallow water, which deepens gradually, can be accessible and friendly to visitors of all ages At the West there is Heaven for harpooners and scuba-divers. Here you will meet tourists staying at the two hostels, the yachts and sailing boats. At Mathraki there is a local GP. You will come here by ship from Corfu town or Agios Stephanos, at the NW of Corfu, as well as by sea cab or boat. |
