For historic reasons Corfu is full of churches . Most of them are humble churches which cannot be compared in size to the churches of the West, however they are so devout that they surprise visitors. Historic churches, connected to all difficulties of the obscure centuries of the middle ages, churches that enlightened people that safeguarded their faith and that found there the strength to survive through continuous conquests and destructions.
Western visitors might be surprised, but these churches are the home of the holy reliques of Saint Spyridon and Santa Theodora, Saints Arsenios, Iason and Sosipatros. Those churches are constructed on tombs of Saints, like Saint Gaios. Those very churches where at the same time the Gates through which passed knowledge, art , progress , social revolution , national revolution , national resistance . Those churches housed the first popular schools , it is here that Homer was read again , it is here that speeches for social equity , were first announced for the National revolution and liberation, these places were the shelter of resistance .
