Natura regions - Paxos and AntiPaxos islands

gr2230004 This region is comprised by a group of chalky islands and isles with rocky shores, which quite often are degenerated, as well as by a marine part around the islands, with a depth of up to 50 m. The largest islands of this group, Paxos and AntiPaxos , have got an interesting morphology . Paxos is the only island of the complex with permanent residents (appr. 2.800 residents). The flaura of the region is comprised of approximately 450 species

The majority of those species  (about 65%) is typically Mediterranean, while two more, particularly Centaurea paxorum and Limonium antipaxorum , are local endemic species . The main type of self-sown vegetation, which is predominant in the region, seems to be evergreen bushes, often in the form of trees, which belong either to the "Oleo-ceratonion" ( Ceratonia siliqua, Olea europaea, Pistacia lentiscus, Calicotone villosa, Quercus coccifera etc.), or to the "Quercion ilicis" ( Phillyrea latifolia, Phamnus alaternus, Pistacia terebinthus, Arbutus adrachne etc.) family. Bunches of Mediterranean pine trees ( Juniperus phoenicea, Pinus halepensis, Cupressus sempervirens ) are quite common with both vegetation types mentioned before. The bunches Juniperus phoenicea and Pinus halepensis can be found at the north-western and the south-eastern ( Moggonissi isle) of Paxos, respectively. At the rocky shores, the coastal and subcoastal vegetation zone are characterised by the presence of flaura species, which have adapted to the respective environment (i.e. Crithmum maritimum, Silene sedoides, Reichardia picroides, Daucus carrota, Brassica cretica, Limonium antipaxorum, Centaurea paxorum etc.). At the central part of Paxos there has been a degradation of the type of vegetation Oleo-ceratonion and Quercion - ilicis, because of human activities (open fires, olive gloves, viniculture etc.) and a replacement of this type of vegetation by the secondary vegetation of brushwood (Coridothymion).

The maquis and the brashwood which are found on Paxos are considered typical types of Mediterranean vegetation.
